HEIF files from Samsung, Android and cameras

Many Android phones — including Samsung Galaxy models with “High efficiency pictures” enabled — and newer cameras from Canon, Sony and Fujifilm save photos as HEIF. The format saves space, but most websites, older software and Windows without extra codecs can’t open it.

Converting HEIF to JPG gives you a file that works everywhere. If your photos came from an iPhone, see iPhone photo to JPG.

    FAQ

    What is a HEIF file?

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is an image container that stores photos compressed with modern codecs. Apple devices save it with the .heic extension; Samsung, other Android phones and some cameras use .heif.

Is HEIF the same as HEIC?

Almost. HEIC is HEIF with HEVC (H.265) compression — the variant Apple uses. This converter accepts both .heif and .heic files.

How do I open a HEIF file on Windows?

Windows needs an extra codec to display HEIF. The simplest option is to convert it: drop the .heif file on this page and download a JPG that opens in the Photos app, Paint, Word and everywhere else.

    Are Samsung .heif photos supported?

Yes. Samsung Galaxy “high efficiency pictures” are standard HEIF files and convert to JPG like any other.

Is the HEIF to JPG converter free?

Yes — free, no sign-up, no watermark. Files are processed locally and never uploaded.
